You\u2019ve written a press release, and now it\u2019s time to formulate an attractive headline. Something that gets lots of people to click and also summarises the news item. What should you think about?<\/p>\n

  1. Tell a story.<\/strong>\u00a0The classic headline \u2018Man bites dog\u2019 causes the reader to start imagining the incident, and become curious about what really happened.<\/li>\n
  2. Short<\/strong>. There are\u00a0studies\u00a0<\/a>showing that a short headline gets more clicks. What\u2019s more, the readers remember it better. No more than 50 characters including spaces is a good rule of thumb.<\/li>\n
  3. Not \u2018not\u2019.<\/strong>\u00a0Negations make many people a little confused, which is enough for some readers to move on to the next article instead.<\/li>\n
  4. Simple words.<\/strong>\u00a0The word \u2018negations\u2019 is not particularly good in headlines, for example.<\/li>\n
  5. News value.<\/strong> The most obvious point is also the most difficult one. Describing what’s new and interesting in just a few words. Ask yourself what’s new, and take that as your starting point when you formulate the heading. The heading \u2018Man bites dog\u2019, as mentioned above, is good because it relates to something unusual having happened, while \u2018Dog bites man\u2019 describes a quite common event, and so is uninteresting.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
